Wedding in Nowy Wiśnicz

A Friday wedding in Nowy Wiśnicz, portraits below the Kmita and Lubomirski castle, reception at the Panorama venue in Stary Wiśnicz. That afternoon the sky did something no one can order in advance, and it gave the single strongest frame of the whole day.

Morning: two houses, one clock

The bride got ready near Bochnia, the groom in Niepołomice: half an hour apart. With that setup only one thing matters: counting travel time honestly. I start earlier than most couples expect, because the best frames from the morning happen while nobody is watching the clock yet.

Make-up, bridesmaids in robes, the first look in the mirror, that hour holds more genuine reactions than the rest of the day combined. I stage nothing here.

Then the dress, the train on the stairs and a red convertible waiting outside. A car with character does half the photographer's work. You just have to keep people from blocking it.

Church: quiet and at a distance

Inside the Church of the Assumption I work with a long lens, no flash, and never step in front of the altar. The pictures should look as if nobody had been there, and the guests should remember the ceremony rather than a photographer circling the aisle.

Walking out is always fifteen seconds of chaos: petals, rice, everyone at once. I stand lower than the crowd and wait for a face, not for the gesture itself.

Just past the church their friends had set up a gate: coloured smoke and a hand-painted banner. In Poland neighbours block the newlyweds' road and ask for a toast before letting them pass. I know about these from the questionnaire couples fill in before the wedding, so I am in place before the car stops. A gate lasts five minutes: either you are standing there, or you get pictures through a windscreen.

Below the castle: twenty minutes that make the album

The castle in Nowy Wiśnicz sits on a hill above the town and is visible from many places, but only from a few does it look the way it should: large, clear, with no poles or parked cars in frame. We went up in the late afternoon, as a storm gathered over the valley.

A sky like that lasts a quarter of an hour. You can hide from it or position yourselves so it works for the picture: dark background, warm light from the side, the couple in front. We chose the second.

This is exactly why I ask couples to leave a loose twenty minutes around sunset. You do not have to use it, but if the sky offers something like this, there has to be somewhere to go.

Panorama: the entrance, the haze and the first dance

Outside the venue the couple threw their glasses over their shoulders: a Polish custom that follows the welcome with bread and salt, and breaking them is said to bring luck. The same castle stands behind them; the hall is not called Panorama by accident.

The first dance was danced in heavy low haze. It looks spectacular but eats light and hides feet, so I shoot from two sides (once for faces, once for silhouettes against the light), and aim for the moment the haze drops below the waist.

The party: live band, saxophone and a floor that never emptied

This evening had everything a good reportage is built on: a live band, a saxophone player walking down among the guests, and a dance floor that stayed full until morning.

In light like this I do not flood the room with flash. I use what is already lit (the stage lights, the fairy lights, the illuminated moon beside the band), and reach for a flash only when the picture would not exist otherwise.

The bridal games at midnight, the cake, a photo booth with a neon sign, and between all of it the things nobody asks for and everybody looks at longest: laughter at the table, cousins on the floor, children underfoot.

And once more, outside

Late at night we went out in front of the venue with a group of friends. Sparklers, phone torches and no hurry at all: pictures like these only happen when the photographer is still there after midnight.
